Alfred Thayer Mahan

Alfred Thayer Mahan was an American naval officer and historian who was an exponent of sea power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Synopsis

Alfred Thayer Mahan was born on September 27, 1840 in West Point, New York. He served nearly 40 years in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Civil War. Later he became president of the Naval War College at Newport, R.I. In 1890 Mahan published his lectures as The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783 which greatly influenced naval buildup in the years prior to World War I. Mahan died on December 1, 1914, in Washington, D.C.
