Eliza Johnson became First Lady when her husband Andrew assumed the presidency after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Synopsis

Eliza McCardle was born in 1810 and married Andrew Johnson in 1827. The couple set up a tailor shop and raised five children before Andrew turned to politics. After Lincoln's assassination made her First Lady, Eliza left most social duties to her daughter while she refurbished the White House and struggled with illness. During her husband's impeachment, Eliza was a supportive counselor.
