James Mill
James Mill was a writer and governmental official of the late-18th and early-19th century, known for his promotion of Utilitarianism. He was also the father of John Stuart Mill.
Synopsis
Born on April 6, 1773, in Forfarshire, Scotland, James Mill worked in religion and journalism and became a staunch purveyor of Utilitarianism, which focused on happiness for the many. Mill's "On Government" essay stressed the importance of democratic governments, though the writer, who was appointed an official for India, had narrower views on other cultures. He died on June 23, 1836.
