John R. Lynch

John R. Lynch was a black politician who served in the Mississippi state legislature and U.S. House of Representatives after the American Civil War.

Synopsis

John R. Lynch was born September 10, 1847, in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. In 1869 he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives, and was reelected in 1871. In 1872 he was chosen speaker of the House and was elected to Congress and was later elected a second time. In 1876 he was defeated for a third term. In 1880 he ran again and lost, but contested the decision and re-won his seat.
