Early Years

Justine Tanya Bateman was born in Rye, New York, on February 19, 1966. Her father, Kent, was a film producer, and her mother, Victoria, was a flight attendant. She starred in a number of plays as a child, but was inspired to take on roles in commercials at the age of 15, after her younger brother, Jason, landed a spot on Little House on the Prairie. She graduated from Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California, in 1984.

Professional Success

Bateman was still in high school when she landed a big part on the television sitcom Family Ties, starring as Mallory Keaton, the spacey, underachieving younger sister of Alex Keaton (played by Michael J. Fox). The show ran from 1982 to 1989, and helped earn her nominations for two Emmys and one Golden Globe. Her fame and success hid a painful secret, however. In 1996, she revealed that her time on the set of Family Ties was beset with anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating.

In 1988, Bateman got a starring role in the motion picture Satisfaction, a summer romance film that—despite featuring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts—was so poorly received that it prompted one critic to write: "Ms. Bateman's singing is so distant from any human voice that the sound engineers must have been the busiest people on the film." Despite her setback on the big screen, Bateman continued to appear on television, including recurring roles on Men Behaving Badly and Out of Order.

In 2000, the actress took a break from Hollywood and founded her own clothing company. In 2008, she wrote an episode of the sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place. In 2012, she enrolled at UCLA in order to pursue a degree in computer science.

Personal Life

Justine Bateman is married to Mark Fluent, a real-estate developer. They have a son, Duke, and a daughter, Olivia.
