Louis VII

Louis VII was king of France who pursued a long rivalry with Henry II of England.

Synopsis

Louis VII was anointed successor to his father, Louis VI, and in 1137 he became the sole ruler at his father's death. From 1141 to 1143, he was involved in a fruitless conflict with Count Thibaut of Champagne and the papacy. After Louis repudiated his wife Eleanor in 1152, she married Henry, a rival of Louis and future king of England, and the two men and their countries fought for over 20 years.
