Maurice

Maurice was duke and elector of Saxony (southeastern Germany) during the 16th century.

Synopsis

Maurice was born on March 21, 1521, in Freiberg, Saxony. He was duke (1541–'53) and later elector (1547–'53) of Saxony, whose clever manipulation of alliances and disputes gained him the Albertine branch of the Wettin dynasty's extensive lands and the electoral dignity. He was killed in a battle at Sievershausen in 1553.
