Maximilian I

Maximilian I was the first king of Bavaria (1806–25), a member of the house of Wittelsbach.

Synopsis

Maximilian I was born on May 27, 1756 in Mannheim, Palatinate (now Germany). A member of the house of Wittelsbach, in 1799 he became elector of Bavaria. Distrustful of Austria, Maximilian supported the French war effort. He received territories by which he crowned himself king of Bavaria and wrote a new constitution, charter and established a bicameral parliament. He died in 1825.
