Maynard Jackson

Maynard Jackson was a lawyer and the first African American mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, serving three terms (1974–82 and 1990–94).

Synopsis

Maynard Jackson was born on March 23, 1938 in Dallas, Texas. He received his J.D. from the Carolina Central University School of Law and worked as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board. Jackson became vice mayor of Atlanta in 1969 and mayor in 1973, making him the first African American mayor of Atlanta. Jackson served three terms as mayor (1974–82 and 1990–94) and died in 2003.
