Synopsis

Born January 11, 1946, in Kentucky, Naomi Judd worked hard to support her two daughters alone. She began singing with daughter Wynonna in the 1970s, and The Judds had a record deal by 1983. The duo was a country music sensation, with songs like "Girls' Night Out" and "Turn it Loose" before illness forced Naomi's retirement. Judd's younger daughter, Ashley, became a successful film actress.

Single Mother

Musician Naomi Judd was born Diana Ellen Judd on January 11, 1946, in Ashland, Kentucky. The daughter of a gas station owner and riverboat cook, Judd found herself a single mother raising two little girls at a young age. She worked several jobs to support her family, including being a nurse, secretary, waitress and clerk, before she and her daughter Wynonna formed The Judds. The group would go on to become country music's most successful mother-daughter duo. Her second daughter, Ashley Judd, became an acclaimed film actress.

The Judds

Hugely popular, The Judds earned 20 top 10 hits and were undefeated for eight consecutive years at all three major country award shows throughout the 1980s. They received six Grammys, including Country Song of the Year for "Love Can Build A Bridge," written by Naomi.

In 1991, after selling more than 20 million albums, The Judds' success was stopped short when Naomi was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. After launching a farewell tour, which was the industry's top-grossing tour for that year, Naomi retired to fight her illness. Today, she is cured of the virus and serves as spokesperson for the America Liver Foundation. Her autobiography, Love Can Build A Bridge, was a New York Times bestseller.
