Synopsis
Douglass Cecil North received his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, then went on to teach and consult, serving as director of the National Bureau of Economic Research for 20 years. In 1993 he received the Nobel Prize in economics for his work in cliometrics, or "new economic history," which applies economic theory and statistical methods to the study of history.
