Synopsis

Jiang Zemin was born in the Jiangsu province of China in 1926. He was a Chinese official who served as president of China (1993-2003) and was the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (1989-2002). He was instrumental in opening and improving relations with the U.S. In 1997, he participated in the first U.S.-China summit in nearly a decade and in 1998 discussed his human rights record.
