Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse who cared for British soldiers at the battlefront during the Crimean War.

Synopsis

Mary Seacole was born in 1805 in Kingston, Jamaica. Her father was a Scottish soldier and her mother a free black Jamaican woman who was skilled in traditional medicine. Seacole was in London in 1854 when reports of the hardships for soldiers in the Crimean War were made public. She went to the Crimea, assisted at the military hospitals and distributed remedies for cholera and dysentery. Seacole died in 1881.
