U Thant

U Thant was a Burmese diplomat, pacifist and third secretary general of the United Nations.

Synopsis

U Thant became Burma’s permanent UN representative in 1957 and vice president of the UN General Assembly in 1959. After the death of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld, he was elected permanent secretary general in 1962, and he was re-elected for five years in 1966. A devout Buddhist, he sought to apply the principles of detachment and concentration to the solving of international problems.
