British social anthropologist A.R. Radcliffe-Brown was born on January 17, 1881, in Birmingham, Warwick, England. In Radcliffe-Brown's version of functionalism, he viewed the component parts of society as being indispensable to one another, and he developed a systematic framework of concepts relating to the social structures of small-scale societies. Radcliffe-Brown had a profound impact on British and American social anthropology. He died in London, England, on October 24, 1955.
