Ben Okri

Booker Prize–winning novelist Ben Okri is the author of The Famished Road (1991), Infinite Riches (1998) and Starbook (2007), among others.

Synopsis

Born March 15, 1959, Ben Okri was educated both in his native Nigeria and in England. His first novels, Flowers and Shadows (1980) and The Landscapes Within (1981) use surrealism to show the dysfunction of a politically scarred country. This theme persists in Okri's work, which also includes the Booker Prize–winning novel The Famished Road (1991) and essay collection A Way of Being Free (1997). In April 2014, Okri was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Pretoria for his contributions to literature.
