American track athlete Gail Devers overcame Graves disease, a thyroid disorder, to win Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996.
Synopsis
Athlete Gail Devers was born on November 19, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. She ran in high school and college. In 1990, she was diagnosed with Graves disease, a thyroid disorder. Doctors considered amputating her feet, but after months of treatment she returned to the sport. She won gold medals in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games. She competed in 2004, but did not place.
