Preston Sturges

Preston Sturges is regarded as the first Hollywood figure to successfully move from screenwriting to directing his own scripts.

Synopsis

Initially a playwright, Preston Sturges moved to Hollywood and into screenwriting and eventually began to direct his own scripts. He won an Academy Award for the first film he directed and wrote the screenplay for, The Great McGinty (1940). Film scholars argue that Sturges' films were ahead of their time, pushing the conventions of their genre.
