E.J. Pratt

Canadian poet E.J. Pratt is the author of several collections of verse, including The Titans (1926) and Brébeuf and His Brethren (1940).

Synopsis

Born on February 4, 1882, in Western Bay, Newfoundland (which would later become part of Canada), poet E.J. Pratt trained for the ministry and later taught for many years at the University of Toronto. His early collection, The Titans (1926), contains the widely read "The Cachalot," an account of a whale hunt. Brébeuf and His Brethren (1940) is considered to be his best work by some. Later collections include Dunkirk (1941) and Towards the Last Spike (1952).
